German Shepherd Fun Facts & Trivia. How much do you know about the German Shepherd?

  • Other names for the German Shepherd include Alsation, Deutscher Schaferhund and Police Dog .

  • The name of the first registered German Shepherd was Horand v. Grafrath in 1908.

  • James Belushi's had a police dog sidekick in the two movies K-9 and K-911. The dog's name was Jerry-Lee.

  • There are 3 coat types to the German Shepherd: normal stock, long stock and long haired. Both the long stock and the long haired stock are undesireable because the longer haired dogs don't have an undercoat.

  • A different breed, the Shiloh Shepherd, played a part in creating the German Shepherd breed. It is a relatively new breed and is a combination of the Alaskan Malamute, the GSD and several other breeds. It resembles a long coated GSD, only much larger.
